Magic Bites (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews

Publication: March 27, 2007
Publisher: Penguin Group Publishing/ Ace

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for the magic…
When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.
Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles.
The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate’s guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t have it any other way…

Looking for a new paranormal fantasy series to get into, I found out about Magic Bites through a Goodreads group.

I loved Kate. She is a mercenary who has been through some tough times, but she is very resilient and doesn’t seem to even know the meaning of the word quit. But when her guardian/mentor (Greg) dies, Kate is left alone and vows revenge on those who were involved in his death. She crosses paths with the Necromancers and the Pack during her investigation. And though she may not have made the best impressions on them, she tentatively works with them in order to find Greg’s killer.

This book pleasantly surprised me. The story takes place in Atlanta. Buildings are overgrown, destroyed and run-down. Electronics seems to work at random and nothing is as it once was. Everyone has to work hard and fight to survive in this new world. The author did a great job of painting the picture and creating a world that is both unique and interesting. Magic Bites shows a promising start to this series. a I am almost halfway through the series and so far each book gets better. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Urban Fantasy and Paranormal reads with a touch of romance mixed in.

P.S. The ebook version of Magic Bites is on sale for $2.99 with some retailers. Not sure how long that will last, so grab it quick!

RATING: 3 1/2 out of 5.
